Nomad Design Tackle
Nomad Design Tackle manufactures and supplies fishing lures and other fishing accessories to both domestic and international markets. Its main export markets are the US, Singapore, New Zealand and South Africa markets.
Need
In the initial stages of selling overseas, Nomad Design Tackle faced liquidity constraints. The business had working capital tied up in work-in-progress. It needed financial support to free up working capital for business growth.
Solution
Nomad Design Tackle was able to ramp up its production with our $350,000 Export Line of Credit Facility. We supported its working capital requirements associated with export contracts and helped the business fulfil purchase orders with US retailers. Our support gave Nomad Design Tackle the position it needed to expand internationally.
In 2002, Damon Olsen and his family launched a sportfishing operation in Queensland. A few years later, Damon, a trained civil engineer, designed a range of niche tackle products to solve problems he’d experienced on fishing trips. The family set up an online retail and distribution business to sell the range: Nomad Design Tackle.
After successfully exporting their tackle products to markets around the world including New Zealand, South Africa and South East Asia, Nomad Design Tackle caught the attention of Bass Pro, the biggest fishing retailer in the US.
Damon’s wife, Claire Gobe, said while the contract was a great opportunity for them, they needed a solution to finance their forward orders and were unable to secure it from their bank.
“We ended up with Bass Pro and rep groups signed up and organised before we had any stock over there,” she said.
Export Finance Australia helped us make it happen. It’s fulfilling its role perfectly in the finance sector – especially for companies with a great idea and a market for it. I don't know how small businesses like ours would manage without the support we’ve had.

Turning potential into reality
Despite having forward orders and agreements in place, securing finance in Australia to fulfil the order proved difficult. They found Export Finance Australia through an online search and arranged a meeting with Jana Walker, our Business Development Senior Manager in Queensland.
“Jana was amazing,” Claire said. “We’re super thankful that she could see the potential in the contracts we had in place and was able to provide finance based on that.”
Export Finance Australia initially provided Nomad Design Tackle with a Small Business Export Loan, enabling the business to fulfill their large US contract.
“The finance was absolutely critical,” Claire explained. “We wouldn't have been able to do the deal without it.”
After securing more overseas orders, we provided an Export Line of Credit to help Nomad Design Tackle grow their global business further. Claire said our finance solutions are supporting all their international contracts and has enabled the company to significantly develop its US distribution.
